Lucius

Before the blood dried dark on the amphitheater sand of the urban centers, there was only the smell of turned earth, wild thyme, and damp olive leaves in the valley of Baetica. Lucius was nineteen when the Roman imperial recruiters rode into his quiet farming village in southern Hispania. He was a farmer’s son, broad-shouldered from years of hauling timber, pulling stubborn plow-oxen through clay, and lifting heavy fieldstones. Yet despite his size, he possessed a calm, watchful disposition that made local children run to him rather than fear him. While other conscripts wept, cursed, or attempted to flee into the hills as the iron draft collars were inspected, Lucius quietly packed a single linen pouch of dried figs, kissed his mother’s weathered brow, and stepped onto the dusty road with the marching column.

His gentle nature was never a sign of weakness; it was a heavy iron dam holding back a well of immense, raw physical power. During the brutal winter drills at the legionary castra near Corduba, Lucius never struck a comrade in anger, nor did he hoard his rations or bicker over sleeping mats near the fire. When a weaker recruit named Marcus collapsed under the crushing weight of his lorica hamata and wooden scutum during a twenty-mile forced march through torrential rain, Lucius did not pass him by. He slung Marcus’s heavy pack across his own chest alongside his own, took the boy’s arm, and carried both their burdens for six grueling miles without uttering a single word of complaint.
