Before the blood dried dark on the amphitheater sand of the urban centers, there was only the smell of turned earth, wild thyme, and damp olive leaves in the valley of Baetica. Lucius was nineteen when the Roman imperial recruiters rode into his quiet farming village in southern Hispania. He was a farmer’s son, broad-shouldered from years of hauling timber, pulling stubborn plow-oxen through clay, and lifting heavy fieldstones. Yet despite his size, he possessed a calm, watchful disposition that made local children run to him rather than fear him. While other conscripts wept, cursed, or attempted to flee into the hills as the iron draft collars were inspected, Lucius quietly packed a single linen pouch of dried figs, kissed his mother’s weathered brow, and stepped onto the dusty road with the marching column.

His gentle nature was never a sign of weakness; it was a heavy iron dam holding back a well of immense, raw physical power. During the brutal winter drills at the legionary castra near Corduba, Lucius never struck a comrade in anger, nor did he hoard his rations or bicker over sleeping mats near the fire. When a weaker recruit named Marcus collapsed under the crushing weight of his lorica hamata and wooden scutum during a twenty-mile forced march through torrential rain, Lucius did not pass him by. He slung Marcus’s heavy pack across his own chest alongside his own, took the boy’s arm, and carried both their burdens for six grueling miles without uttering a single word of complaint.

When the First Germanic Campaign erupted along the wild banks of the Rhine, Lucius’s cohort was deployed directly to the front lines. It was there, amidst the screaming chaos, freezing mud, and dense foliage of the northern forests, that his legendary reputation was forged in blood. During a surprise dawn ambush, a massive barbarian warband breached the Century's shield wall, slaughtering the front ranks and throwing the line into total panic. Lucius did not run. Standing resolute over the fallen, bleeding body of his centurion, he raised a heavy iron-reinforced scutum and swung his gladius with terrifying, mechanical precision.

He cut down seven hardened warriors in as many minutes—not out of bloodlust or a desire for military decorations, but out of a fierce, unyielding protective instinct to keep his surrounding brothers alive. Every blow he struck was clean, decisive, and free of malice. By his third year of service, whispers of the 'Gentle Titan of the Tenth Legion' had spread from the cold northern frontier all the way to the marble plazas of Rome itself. Transferred to the Praetorian guard after single-handedly protecting an entire wagon train of Dacian non-combatants from a rogue legate’s torches, Lucius became a living legend among the ranks. He was a fearsome warrior on the battlefield, yet in the quiet off-duty hours, he could be found tending to wounded cavalry horses, mending leather sandals for elderly camp followers, and sharing his meager pay with orphans in the garrison towns.

Then came the dark, unnatural night the sky split wide open above the Apennine mountains.
