How this story opens

The birds went quiet three days before the stranger came.

Orrin noticed it first on the high pasture, where he had spent the week driving the village's sheep up toward the last of the autumn grass. There was always birdsong up there. Larks rose from the heather like thrown sparks, and the rock-pipits chattered along the drystone walls, and somewhere above the ridge a buzzard was always turning a slow wet circle against the clouds. On the first morning the larks did not rise. On the second the pipits sat on the walls with their feathers puffed out, silent, watching the road. On the third day the buzzard was gone altogether, and the sky over Tarn's Rest hung empty and grey as the inside of a pot lid.
