The mist did not rise from the terraced valley; it pooled there like milk left out to sour. High on the ridge of Kaza's Edge, Sena paused to adjust the copper-bound spear slung across her back. Her mother had carved the ash wood fifteen years before she stepped into the deep forest and never returned. The grain was dark with oil, smooth where Sena's palms gripped it during the readings. Below, the stone huts of the village huddled against the mountain slope, their thatched roofs ringed with salt-crust and dried fever-weed—clumsy wards hung by frightened farmers who did not understand what hunted them.
"The court expected us before midday," a voice said behind her.
