How this story opens

The fog came into the Outer Sunset the way it always did in late October, not like weather at all but like a tenant with no intention of ever leaving. It pressed its gray shoulder against the windows of the narrow stucco house on Judah Street, softened the streetlamps into smeared coins of amber, and swallowed the far end of the block so completely that the neighborhood seemed to end at the Hendersons’ crooked picket fence and everything beyond it was merely a rumor. Somewhere past the rooftops the Pacific was breathing, a long, slow, salt-heavy exhalation that Julian Hart could hear on quiet nights if he held his own breath. Tonight he held it often, because the alternative was to listen to the silence of his own room.

The room was eleven feet by nine, and he knew those numbers the way a prisoner knows his cell. A single bed with a sagging middle. A radiator that ticked and sighed like an old man arguing with himself. A desk that was really a hollow-core door laid across two gray filing cabinets, and on the desk a laptop with a cracked corner, a mug holding a cold skin of chamomile, and a lamp whose shade had gone the color of weak tea. On the wall above it, pinned in neat rows, were two hundred and twelve index cards, each one the ghost of a chapter. They were the bones of a novel called The Lighthouse Keeper’s Arithmetic, which Julian had been writing for three years, and which had stopped, as if struck by a small private stroke, on page two hundred and thirteen.
