The dusk over Culiacán bled across the sky like freshly spilled wine, painting the Sierra Madre peaks in bruised shades of violet and ochre. Inside the sprawling stone courtyard of Hacienda de las Espinas, the air tasted of roasted agave, fine cigar smoke, and underlying tension.

At twenty-six, Sofia Sandoval moved through the estate with the quiet authority of a heiress born to cartels. She was the youngest daughter of Don Ernesto Sandoval, head of the northern cartel network that controlled the Pacific transit routes. Sofia was far from a decorative cartel princess. Educated in finance and logistics in Madrid, she managed the syndicate's legitimate agricultural exports and port holdings with ruthless efficiency. Yet, no amount of European education could strip away the copper scent of blood that anchored her family's empire.

Standing near the stone fountain, Sofia adjusted the cuff of her silk blouse, her dark eyes scanning the perimeter. Today was the annual alliance summit between the Sandoval cartel of Mexico and the ancient, formidable Montero syndicate of Medellín, Colombia. For decades, the two families had maintained a fragile peace, exchanging silver and cocaine across Caribbean sea lanes. But recent maritime seizures and rogue executions along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec had strained the alliance to its breaking point.

"You look like you're preparing for an execution, Sofia," a smooth, low baritone voice spoke behind her.

Sofia turned slowly. Standing at the top of the marble steps was Mateo Montero.

He was thirty, tall, and carried himself with the predatory ease of a jaguar pacing an iron cage. As the primary heir and operational commander of the Montero cartel, Mateo was feared across Medellín for his cold intellect and unmatched ruthlessness. He wore a tailored charcoal suit without a tie, the top two buttons of his crisp white shirt unfastened, revealing dark skin tanned by the South American sun. A faint, jagged scar cut through his left eyebrow—a souvenir from a rooftop gunfight in Cali four years prior.

"In our line of work, Mateo," Sofia replied softly in accented Spanish, her voice cool and steady, "a summit and an execution often look identical until the first bullet flies."

Mateo descended the stairs, his dark amber eyes locked onto hers with unsettling focus. He stopped two paces away, bringing with him the scent of cedarwood, rich espresso, and gun oil. "Your father is getting old, Sofia. He speaks of peace, but his capos are skimming from my Caribbean shipments. My family did not fly three thousand miles to be insulted by northern lieutenants."

"And my family did not build this empire to be patronized by Medellín lords who think they own the sea," Sofia countered, stepping an inch closer, refusing to yield a single foot of ground.

Mateo’s lips curved into a faint, dangerous smile. For a second, beneath the cold calculation of cartel politics, an undeniable, magnetic heat flared between them—a spark born of equal power, intellect, and danger.

Before either could speak further, the heavy iron gates of the courtyard burst open. Heavy automatic gunfire shattered the quiet evening air as four blacked-out SUVs slammed into the driveway, mounted machine guns opening fire on the guards.
